Jennifer's Canon G10 Digital Photography Workshop. : Jenn...Let's reschedule your workshop after July 12...

Here is an article I want to explain about composition

Composition is possibly the simplest and hardest art principle to teach beginning
photographers. Composition was long use by masters in painting, drawing, and sculpture.
Go to the world's greatest museums and you see how much art done by the great masters
from the Renaissance to the modern look like photographs. These art masters have develop
keen powers of observation from years of training and studying with their master teachers.

This art principle of composition can be learned by photographers- both beginner and
advanced amateurs by studying art principles in drawing and painting. To become a more
well-rounded photographer, one must study drawing and painting. For those who want to
excel in portrait photography, study anatomy. To learn more about landscape photography,
study the quality of the light and atmospheric paintings of Turner.

Composition in photography can also learn by studying the Golden Mean.
Watch this video by Ronald Swanwick. Photographers must learn from painters.

Reviews by Ken Rockwell ( The Nikon guy ) on the G10
http://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/g10.htm

Tips for using the Canon G10.

1) Don't shoot anything over 400 ISO or your photo quality will suffer.
Higher ISO means higher noise in the shadow details.
2) Shoot RAW when possible and shoot in the best possible lighting.
But if you're good on shooting the right exposure each time, then use RGB JPEGS
3) If you want to shoot fast action , don't use the G10. Get a DSLR like the Canon Rebel XTI

Ben's Canon 40D New York Digital Photography Workshop : Canon 40D Reviews and Links

1) Read up on Phil Askey October 2007 review of the Canon EOS 40D on DIgital Photography Review.
.Dpreview.com is one of the best technical review sites on the web

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos40d/

2) I like Philip Greenspun's reviews on the 40D. He has been running the Photo.net site for a while.
More practical advice and less technical verbage. Can you believe the Canon Rebel XTI has the
same sensor as the 40D which is a bigger body and much more durable than the smaller XTI body.
At 6.5 frames per second, the 40D is faster than the 30D,5D. Great for sports and anything that moves fast.

http://photo.net/equipment/canon/40D/

3) Here is another review by Bob Atkins on the 40D. Bob has a complete review of the entire Canon syste,.

http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/digital/canon_eos_40D_review_1.html

High ISO noise review on the Canon 40D versus the 20D. Your Canon 40D can handle low light situations
where you have to use 1600 and 3200 film speeds. Remember high ISO in the older DSLR's means more
noise. Noise are like large film grade in high speed film ( TMAX 3200 ). They look like small white dots
in the shadow area when you do an extreme closeup of a portion of your photo.

http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/digital/canon_eos_40D_review_3.html#update1

4) Here is Roland Lim's Canon 40D review.

http://rolandlim.wordpress.com/2007/09/02/canon-eos-40d-review/
Training videos on the Canon 40D as seen on U-tube

Check out camera labs U-tube video. It is about 10 minutes. Its a really good training video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbppTQfuJ8M

Shooting live view with the 40D. I would suggest a sturdier tripod for shooting nightscapes and low light.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6kBirlKjQSo&feature=related

Shooting modes on the 40D. Just use the Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, and Manual Exposure.
Use the P mode ( Program Mode ) for shooting with flash indoors photographing people.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZTNqw7HW6g&feature=related

Rules of aperture. Aperture is adjusted by making the lens opening bigger or smaller. Aperture is measured
in F Stops. The bigger the aperture (2.8) the less depth of field ( more light coming in ) and the smaller
the aperture ( F8 and higher ) the more depth of field. Depth of field is the area of sharp focus from the
front and rear of the focusing point ( your subject matter ). Front of the subject is called the foreground
and the back of the subject matter is the background.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aiWrUjgbcjE&feature=channel

The depth of field rules by Michael. Aperture Size, Distance, Wide Angle Lens.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qSm1J9d15Gk&feature=channel

Why are my pictures blurry? A lot of beginning photographers have this problem when shooting in natural light.
To get sharp pictures you need to have a steady hand and work on your breathing technique. Compose, inhale, fire,
and exhale. Do this subsconsciously and with practice it becomes normal. Also to get sharper pictures, shoot with
a higher ISO or try to shoot at a minimum of 1/60 or 1/125 of a second to get a steady shot. Also a camera with
Image stabilization gives you an extra 2 stop advantage so you can even shoot at 1/15 second in really low
light using ISO of 1600 and 3200

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAqb3kt84TM&feature=channel

Rules of shutter speed. I explain the shutter speeds from 5 secs to 30 seconds is use mostly for shooting night
photography on a tripod using F11-F22 apertures. As a rule in bright light, shoot a minimum of 1/60 sec and higher
to avoid camera shake or blurry pictures. Fast shutter speeds of 1/500 and higher are popular in sports, wildlife
photography ( moving animals) and specialty photography.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tA2yQ22YGD8&feature=channel

This shutter speed Utube tutorial is mostly a slide show.

Nikon D300 Reviews...

By my favorite Nikon Reviewer - Ken Rockwell
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d300.htm

How to calibrate Nikon's Picture Control for different subject matter and lighting situations.

Check out how to shoot wild colors and normal accurate colors. This is what Ken Rockwell
recommends and I agree. Its all a matter of experimentation. You can work a formula to make
your digital pictures look like Kodachrome Slide Film ( depends on speed ) or Fuji Velvia
Color Slide Film. Nikon call theirs PICTURE CONTROL while Canon calls it PICTURE STYLE.

Also the quality of your color and resolution will vary from one NIKON LENS to another.
Be sure to record your experimentations and calibrations and from experience you will be able
to dial in the right combinations. Save your experimentation on Photoshop and upload it to
your computer or a website.

Check Ken's recommendations.
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d300/picture-control.htm

Be sure to set your ADR ( Adaptive Dynamic Range ) to Normal in the D300.
For picture control, I like shooting STANDARD for STILL LIFE ( Inanimate Objects ).
Sharpening to 5. For people use STANDARD ( for accurate skin tone ) or even NEUTRAL
for lower contrast. Depends on the lighting situation when you photograph People outdoors
in natural light or indoors ( can be contrasty ). I use the VIVID to simulate the warm tones
of FUJI FILM but be careful as some light skin tones would look too red. Ken said if you do
Plus 3 Saturation on VIVID it will look wild.

I like shooting CANONS when it comes to people's skin tones as it is a lot more
accurate and Canon's Picture Style assigns numeric Values. Canon's picture style has
Standard, People, Landscape, Faithful, Neutral...

WHITE BALANCE, QUALITY, & ISO

One thing I like about my Nikon D200 is the east access to this three most important
buttons. With Canon's 40D,50D, I have to go to the top menu. With Nikon DSLR you
can do it faster.Exceptions are the Nikon D70s, D40, D60.D50. and D80. So this is why
you want to upgrade.

Anytime you get ready for the next shot, these are the three controls you have to set up first
before you shoot. It was so much easier when shooting with film but having the White Balance
and ISO adjustments gives you an advantage. With film, you have to load different speed films
to match the lighting situation ( 100 for bright daylight outdoors and 800 ASA for indoor
shooting and outdoor sports shooting ). The Automatic White Balance ( AWB ) replaces the
filters we use to buy to match the lighting. Remember the wratten filters marked 85B, 80A, 82A,
Red, Yellow , FLD ( flourescent ). Now all these filters are built in as software into your digital
camera. Its like combining Photoshop, a computer, and a regular 35mm Film Camera which is
what today's sophisticated digital cameras. There's just too many options.

More excellent recommendations about AWB, Quality, ISO from Ken Rockwell.
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d300/users-guide/controls-top.htm#wb

VERY IMPORTANT DETAIL HERE...NEF ( Raw recording mode )

Use COMPRESSED to get the full raw quality ( digital negative ).
Don't use Lossless Compressed or Uncompressed. You get the same image
quality from the other settingss.....NEF ( RAW ) Bit Dept. Use 12 bit.....
14 bit takes too much space.

ANOTHER VERY IMPORTANT DETAIL HERE... ( COLOR SPACE )
Use sRGB. Its the world's standard for digital images, internet, digital printing.
Don't use RGB unless you know what you are doing.

Read the links to see what other photographers think of using sRGB verus Adobe RGB.
It gets really too technical here for most beginners. If you work in Advertising and have the
budget for expensive monitors that needs calibration all the the time and really fast
computers ( Apple G5 or Dual Core Processors ), then use RGB.. For beginners and
amateurs , please use sRGB and don't complicate your life. Make it simple.

Reviews on the Nikon D80.
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond80/

Here's an extensive review on the D80 by DCRP..
http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/nikon/d80-review/

Ken Rockwell's reviews of the D80 menus
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d80/users-guide/menus-shooting.htm

Unique features of the Nikon D80.

1) Shooting black and white with the built in filters ( orange, green, red , etc. )
2) Auto ISO mode. Ken Rockwell recommends setting the D80 to minus. 07 in
exposure compensation. check the D80 reviews by Ken Rockwell.
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d80/users-guide/index.htm
3) Ability to use F mount lenses. Yes, you can use older Nikkor lenses.

4) Hue, contrast, and sharpness adjustments. This is where you can tweak
your camera sensor to match Fuji or Kodak emulsions. Here is what you can see
in an EXIF data files on your DSLR on each image.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/snabero/3504392966/meta/

Tone Compensation ( Contrast ) Ken Rockwell says sets it to AUTO. It could have been
called Automatic Dynamic Range Optimization. Remember 35mm film has a bigger
dynamic range. The D80 automatically lowers contrast and increases dynamic range for
contrasty subjects and cranks up contrast for dull subjects.

Ken says to avoid custom tone compensation. If you crank it too much it will look to
vivid for certain subject matter like portraiture. Just leave it in the AUTO position and
pay attention to the lighting.

Hue adjustment . Don't touch this. This rotates your color to all the different spots
in the color wheel. Auto automatically adjusts all colors. O Normal is great for
normal people shots. Moderate tones down the color. Plus enhanced...Great for
violent color ( psychedelics )..But then there is photoshop too.

5) Three color modes - Two in sRGB, three in Adobe RGB space.
Read Ken Rockwell reviews on Adobe RGB versus sRGB. He recommends using sRGB
http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/adobe-rgb.htm

Nikon D80 has three setting. 1A, sRGB is default. Normal and boring. Color mode II ,
Adobe RGB gives dull color. USe this if you print your own works. Color mode IIIA, uses
sRGB gives bolder colors. If you like Fuji film ,use this one.

Another color management experiment: sRGB wins again.

More discussions on Adobe RGB versus sRGB..start shooting RAW files
http://danandsherree.com/2005/03/04/should_i_shoot_in_th.php

6) D80 can shoot multiple exposures.Hit number of shots, hit OK, go up to DONE.
Works with JPEGS and NEFS, Dont turn off automatic exposure compensation.

FILM SPEEDS - ISO

The lower the ISO ( film speed ) the better quality pictures you get. The higher the ISO ( Film Speed),
the lower quality of images because of image noises. There is an exception with the new high ISO
speed sensitivity from the new Canon and Nikon digital camera models ( Nikon D300 and Canon 50D )

100- 200-400-800-1600-3200-6400-
The difference between each film speed is equivalent to one stop.

Which film speed to use for a particular type of lighting

100-200 ISO - Bright daylight and bright overcast days, Flash Photography Indoors & Outdoors
For shooting outdoor portraits with shallow depth of field.

400-800 ISO - Medium speed film for overcast or outdoor images in shade, Natural lighted
window portraits. Use when shooting with a long telephoto lens. 800 speed is good for
shooting fast moving objects in low light

1600-3200 ISO - High speed film. For shooting interior scenes with some lighting ( restaurants,
night vlubs, most homes and offices. Shooting without a tripod. Useful speed for
shooting long telephoto lenses ( 200 mm and longer ). Popular speed for shooting
sports events ( late afternoon & early evening ).

WHEN TO USE THESE APERTURES ( F-STOPS)

Definition - Aperture is expressed in F stops . The amount of light coming to the lens is determined
by the size of the aperture of the lens iris. The bigger the aperture F stop ( lens opening ), the more light comes
in. the smaller the aperture, the less light is admitted . F1.8 is a very big lens opening versus F11.0 which is
a smaller opening. Each lens has a maximum & minimum aperture. The best lenses ( and more expensive
quality ) have large apertures ( F stops ) like the 50mm 1.4 portrait lens, the 85mm 1.8, 200mm 2.8 lens.

F1.8- F2.8 - Great for shooting portraits, fashion, sports, and macro shots with shallow depth of field. Shallow depth of field
means background behind the subject matter is out of focus or blurry. Fast lenses with F1.8 and F2.8 are great for getting rid of clutter in the background & creating good bokeh. These apertures are
great for shooting in low lighting conditions.

F4.0- F5.6 - Good for medium portrait shots or telephoto taken with a prime or telephoto zoom lens ( like Canon's
70-200mm F4). At these apertures, with a good telephoto, you can still shoot with a good background blur,
Longer telephoto lenses at 5.6 still produces a good background blur depending on lens quality.

F8.0 - This is the sharpest F-stop in any optical camera lens for shooting film or digital.v This aperture produces the
a very good depth of field esp. in wide angle lenses ( 11-24mm )and normal lenses ( 50mm ) for full sensor
digital cameras. Practical aperture to use in flash photography at events and weddings.

F11- F22 - These F stops produces very high depth of fields in wide angle, normal, and short telephoto lenses.
To get the best resolution in digital., shoot at F11.0 or F16. Best resolution for shooting landscapes
                    and cityscapes.

WHEN TO USE THESE SHUTTER SPEEDS

30 secs - 1 sec - For shooting twilight & night photography scenes with a tripod
1 sec - 1/15 sec - For creating movement effect ( blur ) in shooting waterfalls, water scenes in a landscape
1/15 - 1/60 sec - For shooting interior club scenes, restaurant interiors, home lighting
1/30 - 1/125 sec - For shooting portraits with natural light and existing lighting..For shooting with flash.
Shooting outdoor scenes in bright and natural light.
1/250- 1/1000 sec - For shooting moving objects ,people and cars in bright lighting conditions, Beach scenes.
1/1000- 1/8000 sec. - For capturing fast moving cars, Olympic sports,

Shallow depth of field
mean background behind the subject matter is out of focus or blurry. Fast lenses with F1.8 and
F2.8 are great for getting rid of clutter in the background & creating good bokeh.

F8.0 - This is the sharpest F-stop in any optical camera lens for shooting film or digital. This aperture produces the
a very good depth of field esp. in wide angle lenses ( 11-24mm )and normal lenses ( 50mm ) for full sensor

FILM SPEEDS - ISO

Film speed is the camera film or digital camera sensor's sensitivity to light.
The lower the number, the less sensitive to light. The higher the number, the more sensitive to light .

Shallow depth of field
mean background behind the subject matter is out of focus or blurry. Fast lenses with F1.8 and
F2.8 are great for getting rid of clutter in the background & creating good bokeh.

F8.0 - This is the sharpest F-stop in any optical camera lens for shooting film or digital. This aperture produces the
a very good depth of field esp. in wide angle lenses ( 11-24mm )and normal lenses ( 50mm ) for full sensor
digital cameras.
